Battery and energy storage manufacturing equipment

The only all-American electrode equipment lineup

IMC is the only fully US-based company engineering and manufacturing all three core battery electrode converting machines — coaters, calenders, and slitters — designed, machined, fabricated, programmed, and tested in America. Others build coaters or slitters domestically; to our knowledge, no other US company engineers and manufactures electrode calenders on American soil, let alone the complete set. For programs with domestic-content requirements, supply chain security mandates, or production schedules that depend on fast, responsive equipment support in their own time zone, that makes IMC unique in the industry.

Why one builder for all three processes matters

Coating, calendering, and slitting are not independent steps — they are one coupled system. Coat weight uniformity determines how the calender loads the web; calendering density and the stresses it creates determine how the electrode slits and winds; slitting edge quality feeds straight into cell assembly yield. Because IMC engineers all three machines, we understand these interactions better than anyone: when a slitting problem is really a calendering problem, when a calendering limit is really a coating profile issue, and how to design each machine knowing what the others will do to the web. A builder who makes only one of the three machines can optimize that machine. Because IMC builds all three, we can optimize the whole process.

From slurry to dry: there from the beginning

IMC has built electrode processing equipment since the late 1980s, working alongside early lithium battery pioneers — and we have been on the front end of every major process shift since: slurry coating and NMP solvent systems, warm calendering for high-density electrodes, and roughly three decades of dry powder processing that positions IMC at the leading edge of the dry electrode transition. Whatever the industry's next process shift turns out to be, IMC will be building the machines for it, as we have for every shift since the 1980s.

Beyond lithium: nickel foam electrode experience

IMC's electrode experience extends well beyond lithium-ion. We have engineered pasting and compression equipment for nickel foam electrodes — the substrate behind alkaline hydrogen electrolyzers, nickel-hydrogen long-duration storage, Ni-MH, and nickel-zinc batteries. Processing a 95%+ porous 3D metal structure is a fundamentally different converting problem than slurry on foil, and IMC is one of the few equipment builders anywhere with real experience doing it.

Support that never crosses an ocean

The electrode equipment decision usually gets framed as a price question: lower-cost Asian equipment, or premium European machines. What that framing leaves out is everything after commissioning, and program success often depends on it. Overseas equipment can mean parts with twelve-week lead times and customs paperwork, service visits scheduled around international travel, and modifications that require an engineering team nine time zones away. We have seen, time after time, manufacturers discover a year into production that the equipment they bought cannot be adapted to the process they actually ended up running, with no one on this continent in a position to fix it.

IMC equipment is engineered, built, and supported from Birmingham, Alabama. The engineers who designed your machine answer the phone about it. Parts come from our shop or our domestic supplier network. Modifications, rebuilds, and process changes are handled by the team that holds the original design files — for the entire working life of the machine. We stand by our equipment, and our customers don't get surprised a year after startup.

Complete equipment for electrode manufacturing

IMC provides the full equipment portfolio for lithium-ion battery electrode manufacturing — coating, calendering, slitting, drying, and material handling — as standalone machines or fully integrated production lines. That experience covers some of the first electrode processing equipment built in North America.

That early work has evolved into decades of continuous engineering development across every stage of the electrode manufacturing process. We understand how each step affects the ones that follow — how coating uniformity determines calendering outcomes, how calender settings influence slitting performance, and how the cumulative quality of all process steps determines cell performance.
