IMC multi-zone drying system

Drying is typically the longest, most expensive, and most process-critical section of any coating or converting line. The dryer's job is to remove solvent or water from the wet coating evenly, at a controlled rate, without creating defects. Drying too aggressively causes surface skinning, blistering, and internal porosity. Drying too slowly limits line speed and throughput. The temperature profile through the dryer directly affects the final product's microstructure, adhesion, porosity, and performance properties.

Innovative Machine Corporation designs and builds multi-zone drying systems with independent temperature and airflow control for each zone. Systems are configured for the specific coating chemistry, substrate, and production requirements of each application.

Drying technologies

Convection drying uses heated air directed onto the web surface through engineered plenums. IMC convection dryers feature independent top and bottom plenums with directional air delivery, VFD-controlled fans, and adjustable plenum-to-web distances for process optimization.

Flotation drying supports the web on a cushion of air, eliminating roller contact with the wet coating surface. Essential for applications where roller contact would damage or contaminate the freshly applied coating. IMC flotation dryers maintain stable web position through the drying zone using calibrated air bearing nozzles.

Infrared drying delivers radiant energy directly to the coating surface for rapid initial drying or supplemental heat input. IMC integrates IR elements where the process benefits from targeted surface heating.

UV curing uses ultraviolet light to initiate polymerization and cross-linking of UV-curable coatings. IMC integrates UV curing stations with controlled exposure intensity, inerted atmospheres where required, and thermal management for substrate protection.

NMP and solvent-rated designs

For coating processes using NMP, ethanol, ethyl acetate, or other volatile organic solvents, IMC designs dryers with explosion-proof motors, spark-resistant fans, LEL monitoring, sealed wiring practices, and purge air systems — engineered into the dryer from the start rather than retrofitted onto a standard design. HEPA-filtered supply air is standard for pharmaceutical, battery, and other cleanliness-sensitive applications.

Process monitoring

Embedded pyrometers in each zone measure actual material temperature rather than air temperature, giving real-time process feedback. Zone temperatures, airflow rates, and material temperatures are logged for process validation and troubleshooting.
