Slitting is the final converting operation for most web-produced materials — the step that transforms master rolls into the finished widths that downstream processes and customers require. It is also one of the most quality-critical operations, because the slit edge quality, width accuracy, and roll structure of the finished rolls directly affect how the material performs in the next process step, whether that is cell assembly for battery electrodes, die-cutting for transdermal patches, or packaging for film products.
Innovative Machine Corporation has been designing and manufacturing slitting systems since the 1950s. Our slitters are engineered for the specific substrate, tolerance, and throughput requirements of each application — from delicate 10-micron metal foils to heavy industrial materials.
Slitting methods
Shear slitting uses paired rotary knives to cut the web with a scissors-like action. Produces clean edges with minimal dust generation. The standard for battery electrode slitting and most precision film applications.
Razor slitting uses fixed razor blades to cut the web as it passes over a groove roller or through air. Lower setup cost and fast changeover for applications where edge quality requirements are less demanding.
Crush cut slitting presses a rotary blade against a hardened anvil roll to cut through the web. Suited for thicker and more robust materials including laminates, heavy papers, and nonwovens.
Score slitting uses a blade to score partially through the material, which is then separated by differential tension. Used for controlled-depth cutting and specialty applications.
Web handling and rewind
The quality of the finished slit roll depends as much on the rewind system as on the slitting method. IMC slitters integrate precision rewind stations with constant tension control, lay-on rolls for consistent roll hardness, and lateral positioning for straight-sided rolls. Turret rewinds with automatic splice enable continuous production without stopping for roll changes.
